When the Weekend Feels Right

DRIFT & DWELL

some weekends look like laundry piles and broken sinks. others look like dinner on the grill and summer storms — but sometimes they’re both at once. This past Saturday reminded me that the most memorable moments aren’t about having everything perfect, they’re about choosing to make something special in the middle of the mess.

We finally arrived at the weekend, still shaking off the last of our beach-lag from the long weekend before. the house was in full post-trip chaos: open suitcases, laundry in every room, and a garbage disposal that decided to quit on us. Still, I was determined to spend Saturday not catching up on chores but soaking up time with my family.

Our favorite way to do that? Cooking together. Lately I’ve been inspired by @chacekitchen’s Steak Salad Sunday series to rethink vegetables as something indulgent instead of something we have to eat. When I saw this steak salad from @kalememaybe that included grilled peaches (my end-of-summer obsession), I knew it was the one. To make it even better, I paired it with a grilled peach whiskey sour recipe I stumbled on from @join_jules.

Now, salads usually mean lots of chopping, and this particular cocktail called for a homemade peach purée, so I got the prep started in the afternoon. then, While I wrangled Wyatt’s bedtime routine, Cody fired up the grill. By the time Wyatt was tucked in, everything was ready to plate, sip, and enjoy while we settled in for a movie.

Yes, the cocktail took a little extra effort, and yes, it sounds like a lot. But honestly? It was pure fun. Playlist blasting Nancy Meyers vibes, singing while chopping and stirring, Wyatt army-crawling between our feet, dogs sprawled everywhere—it was messy, loud, and perfect.

Of course, behind the charm was the mess: suitcases still unpacked, baby clothes piled up, laundry half-finished, and a kitchen floor that required hopscotch to get around the cleaning supplies pulled out when the sink started leaking. But that’s real life, isn’t it?

So if you’re waiting for a sign—this is it. Make the fancy cocktail that’s been sitting in your saved folder. Try the new recipe. Light the candles or pull out your china, even if you’re just eating pizza that went cold during bedtime chaos. The extra step or two is always worth it.
